Today we explore the city of Tete in Mozambique. Most people travelling by road to Malawi from South Africa, Zimbabwe and Bostwana know this stunning city its the main crossing point over the might zambezi river. For my family its a city with a special place in our hearts its the birthplace of my beloved wife.
Overview the city of Tete is the provincial capital of Tete and one of Mozambique’s fastest growing cities in recent years the city has witnessed a massive construction boom in infrastructure from housing, malls, upmarket hotels, roads, bridges, etc.
The main languages of communication in Tete are Nyungwe, Portuguese and English. Chichewa is also spoken in tete but not so wide. Tete Province is home to the Nyungwe people.
The Samora Machel bridge is almost a kilometre long and is a key landmark feature for Tete and one of the two Bridges crossing the zambezi river. Another landmark feature the statute of the first president of Mozambique Samora Machel overlooking the Bridge named after himself.
For calls and Internet communication you can visit any vodacom or mcel shop and buy a sim card and register.
For shopping the largest mall is Mall of Tete which opened its doors in 2017 with a variety of tenants including shoprite, Pep, Vodacom, Mcell and other local brands. They are countless options for mall and shopping centres.
Its main airport is Chingozi Airport with direct flights to Maputo and Beira served by fastjet, Ethiopian airlines Mozambique and Lam. An international flight to Johannesburg is served by SA airlink. Chingozi Airport is compact, neat and easy to navigate through from check in all the way to boarding.
Interprovincial Transport Terminal is the main bus station in Tete you get buses to most parts of Mozambique i.e Beira, Chinde, Quelimane, chimoio, etc. Tete is the main crossing point for transit buses, overlanders, trucks and cars from Malawi to Zimbabwe and South Africa.
Accommodation in Tete ranges from upmarket resorts, hotels to budget guest houses. Some of the hotels are Tete ferry, vip executive, paraiso, misterioso, massolossolo lodge, etc. As a visitor always carry a mosquito repellent or sleep under the mosquito net or switch on the air conditioning unit or simply use to avoid protect yourself from mosquitoes.
The Church of boroma is an old Jesuit mission established in the 1880s on the bank of the Zambezi River, upstream from the town of Tete. The buildings have been completely abandoned and neglected. The main cathedral and the surrounding area are truly historical gems being some of the oldest buildings in northern Mozambique, but sadly they are neither protected not being restored. You will most certainly be the only tourist here.
Foodie never miss out on Matapa its a traditional Mozambican sauce consisting of stewed cassava leaves, coconut milk, garlic, and ground peanuts. Although it is a sauce, it can be consumed on its own, but it can also be served with prawns or rice.
Once you visit Tete you will surely fall in love with this stunning city. Avoid going near the Zambezi River at night as crocodiles normally roam around the river banks. For visitors its always recommended to drink bottled water, take care of your belongs. Generally Tete is a safe and peaceful city to visit.
