Mangochi is a small town, and most of the attractions are within walking distance. If you want to explore the surrounding areas, there are several transportation options. It is situated on the western shores of Lake Malawi and is known for its beautiful beaches, crystal-clear waters, and stunning sunsets. Mangochi is also home to several historic landmarks, including the Mangochi Bridge, which was built in the 1890s and is one of the oldest bridges in Malawi.

Attractions in Mangochi
Domwe Island is the largest unpopulated island in Lake Malawi with a highest point of 400m above lake level. It is separated from the mainland by the narrow Ilala Gap which, due to fluctuations in lake level over the millennia, has been dry on several occasions. As a result Domwe Island, unlike all other Lake Malawi islands, is well populated with mammals which have crossed onto the island during these dry times.

The Mangochi Bridge is one of the oldest bridges in Malawi and offers stunning views of the Shire River. Located right next to the new Modern Bakili Muluzi bridge overlooking the Shire river is a memento of Lake Malawi’s rich history, a Hotchkis Gun, from the British Gun boat.

Explore the Lake Malawi National Park a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to over 1000 species of fish, making it one of the best places in the world for freshwater snorkeling and scuba diving.

Visitors can take a boat trip on Lake Malawi and explore the nearby islands, such as the Mumbo Island, which is known for its pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters.

The Lake Malawi Museum is one of the few museums in Malawi, located close to the Queen Victoria Monument near the Bakili Muluzi Bridge in Mangochi. Beside of artefacts representing the local culture, there were remains and mostly pictures of all the steam ships which served at Lake Malawi.

Liwonde National Park is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including elephants, hippos, and crocodiles. Visitors can take a safari tour and experience the park’s natural beauty up close. Please not the park is located outside of Mangochi.

Transportation
Mangochi is easily accessible by road, rail, and air. The nearest international airport is the Chileka International Airport in Blantyre, which is approximately 200 kilometers from Mangochi. From the airport, visitors can take a taxi or hire a car to reach Mangochi.

Mangochi is also well-connected by road, with several buses and Minibuses operating between the town and other major cities in Malawi. Kwezy provides a daily luxury coach service from Blantyre. Departure time is 8:00am and arrival time in Mangochi is 11:30am.

Visitors can also take a train from Blantyre to the Mangochi Railway Station, which is located in the heart of the town. The train service is currently suspended the railway line is under rehabilitation all the way to Lilongwe.

Healthcare
Mangochi District Hospital is the main healthcare facility in the district. It offers comprehensive medical services, including general medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, and emergency care. The hospital serves as a referral center for the surrounding health centers and provides vital healthcare access to the residents of Mangochi.

Local Food
Chambo This is a type of fish that is found in Lake Malawi and is a staple food in Mangochi. It is usually grilled or fried and served with a side of Nsima or Rice or Chips.

Mandasi this is a type of fried bread that is a popular breakfast food in Mangochi. It is usually served with tea or coffee.

Accomodation
Mangochi offers a wide range of accommodations to suit different budgets and preferences. Here are some of i.e Skinny Hippos Lodge, Nkhudzi Beach Lodge, Makokola Retreat, etc.
