Chato: Magufuli’s hometown

Chato District is one of the five districts in Geita Region of northwestern Tanzania. Its administrative centre is the town of Chato. The main ethnic group in the district are the Sukuma. The late John Magufuli, who used to be as President of Tanzania from 2015—2021, was born in Chato. The main languages spoken are sukuma, Kiswahili and English.

Economically The main source of income in Chato district is subsistence farming, which is done without irrigation and relies solely on rain. The main food crops are Bananas, maize, beans, sweet potatoes, and cassava are common crops for local consumption. For Cash crops there is Cotton, coffee, tobacco, and sunflower. And livestock With a few commercial ranches, livestock rearing is largely an afterthought to farming.

Rubondo Island National Park is located on the southwest of Lake Victoria and Rubondo Island, is an extraordinary example of wildlife conservation. It’s Africa’s largest island national park at 26km long and up to 10 km wide. More than 75 percent of the island is covered in pristine equatorial rainforest. Since the 1960s, the island has been a haven for wild chimpanzee, sitatunga antelope, elephant and giraffe.


 
Rubondo Island Camp is the only accommodation in the national park, making it one of the most special places to visit in Tanzania. Aside from a handful of park wardens and researchers, as a guest, you have the island to yourself. 

Rubondo national park can easily be accessed from Mwanza town of Tanzania to Nkome via Geita and from Mwanza to Kasenda via Chato. Once tourists are in Kasenda or Noon they can access a boat to take them to the park. Scheduled and chartered flights are also available.

Transportation to Chato

We recommend flying to Kigali (KGL) Airport, which is 196.2 km away from Chato. The drive from Kigali (KGL) to Chato takes 6h 33m. There is no direct connection from Chato to Dar es Salaam. However, you can take a flight from Dar es salaam to Mwanza airport then take a 5 hour drive to Chato. Its a 19 hour drive from Dar es salaam via the capital city Dodoma which is 1234 kilometres.
