Lilongwe to Hargeisa

Hargeisa is a must visit destination for everyone. A trip to the most peaceful city in the horn of Africa. I decided to go and learn the success story of Hargeisa. The city is full life day and night. For more information on the city you can read my previous blog post on “Hargeisa the capital of Somaliland“. On this post i will show you the two fastest options to travel between the two cities. The only available option is by air.

Which airports to use?

The main airport in Lilongwe (Malaw) is Kamuzu international Airport. The main airport in Hargeisa (Somaliland) is Egal/Hargeisa International Airport.

Lilongwe – Nairobi – Hargeisa.

Traveling through Nairobi, Kenya is more expensive and time consuming. Kenya airways doesn’t offer flights to Hargeisa. The best available option is to use direct flight from Lilongwe to Nairobi with Malawi airlines then sleep over in Nairobi. The following day you take another direct flight from Nairobi to Hargeisa using African express airlines. Travel time can be 15 to 24 hours depending on the day and average price will cost you USD1600 not including hotel and transport charges in Nairobi. Please note that African express airlines flights from Nairobi to Hargeisa are available on Sundays, Thursdays and Fridays. Malawi airline has flights from Lilongwe to Nairobi on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Meanwhile, the return flights are operated on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays early morning.

Lilongwe – Addis Ababa – Hargeisa.

The fastest and easiest way to travel between the two capitals is through Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Ethiopian airlines offers flights to both cities. The connection flight takes about 9 hours depending on the day of travel and will cost you on average about USD1200.
