Likoma island

Likoma is the only island district in Malawi. It comprises of two islands Likoma and Chizumulu both which belong to Malawi, but are located in Mozambique waters of Lake Niassa. Enjoy the beautiful and clean beaches. Likoma is ideal for couples and honeymooners.

For transport they are only two options to reach Likoma. Through the lake the Ilala ship travels from Monkey Bay to Likoma island it passes through Nkhata bay and Chilumba. For flyers they is a daily flight service from Lilongwe operated by Ulendo airlink. The airport in Likoma is the third busiest in Malawi. Transport within the island there are vehicles and motorcycles so rest assured transport from airport to your lodging place is available the cost is based on how good you negotiate.

Attractions Likoma island has Central Africa’s third largest cathedral, St Peter’s. Anglican church. After a tour of the cathedral, you can head to the roof, climb across the bells and the clockwork and view the beautiful scenery of the island. Clean beaches and clear crystal waters and Makungwa forestry in the north. Water activities There are many diving sites around the Island for you to explore and you can take boat trips around the island, to the nearby Chizumulu Island or to neighbouring Mozambique.

Accommodation ranges from 3 star hotels to budget backpackers. From South Island (little Kaya), Mangodrift, Khaiko lodge, Ulisabay and Kaya mawa the options are a bit limited.

For Health any minor illness is referred to saint Peters hospital and for any major illness the District health officer will transport you to Nkhata bay District hospital using the boat ambulance.

grilled fish and kondoole for Foodies fishing is a key industry for the islanders. Kondoole is nsima (mealie meal) which is prepared from cassava flour, and is popularly consumed in the northern part of Malawi by the Tumbuka, Tonga and Ngonde people.

Festivals never miss the annual Likoma Festival it is a contemporary celebration of arts and culture with a strong focus on artists and traditional dances from all over Malawi. It happens in summer usually the second week of October. And weekly dancing competitions known locally as malipenga are frequently held at weekends If you are visiting over a weekend watching one of the dance competitions is a must.
